Seeing improvements in a veteran’s quality of life is one of the most rewarding parts of our work. This was the case for Navy veteran Melissa Dutkiewicz, who was referred to Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) through the America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP) Network looking for support when faced with an unstable home.
Last year Melissa was referred to AKWP after having escaped a toxic relationship. Unfortunately, being on her own left Melissa financially unstable. Though she worked hard to keep her bills in order, she was at risk of homelessness multiple times throughout the year. Stressed from her commission-based insurance job, Melissa was served an eviction notice in December due to her late rent payment. She started waitressing to supplement her income, but the stress of financial instability took a toll on her mental health.
Knowing Melissa’s situation, Case Coordinator Jordan Rashea investigated resources to help Melissa through this time. Melissa told Jordan she wanted help healing from her past trauma, so Jordan first connected her with the Stephen A. Cohen Military Family Clinic. Jordan also learned about a job opening at the Tidal Basin Group through a contact of hers; Given Melissa's emergency medical background as well as experience in administration and insurance, Jordan thought Melissa would be an ideal candidate. Melissa immediately applied and was offered the position after a few rounds of interviews. Melissa started the job in February and told Jordan that she has been loving it so far.
