With the rising costs of lumber and other materials, even simple projects like building a deck have become a financial challenge. When Elaine and her Air Force veteran (1970-1990) husband, Matt, received quotes that were far beyond their budget, Matt decided to take on the deck rebuild himself. Elaine, who had learned about AKWP at her local vet center, reached out for support.Â

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Matt fell through the deck while working on the project, which hospitalized him for a few days with broken bones. Elaine and Matt reached out to AKWP hoping to find assistance finishing this project, as he wouldn't be able to. Â
AKWP reached out to Healing Hearts to see if they could help find volunteers to help them finish their deck. After following up with Elaine, she was incredibly thankful for AKWP’s referral and those who volunteered their time to make sure this project was complete before the weather started changing.Â
