Being unhoused is a heavy burden for veterans, compounded by the uncertainty of where to seek help and possible feelings of shame. Many struggle in silence, feeling isolated and unsure where to turn for the support they desperately need. Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) understands this sense of hopelessness and aspires to be the resource veterans in these positions feel comfortable turning to for stability.
Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Damien Willis* is an Army veteran ('05-'11) who initially visited the Mat-Su Job Center, seeking help from the Disabled Veterans' Outreach Program (DVOP). During a meeting with Damien, the DVOP staff learned about his dire situation. Damien had spent the past year living in his truck with no stable place to call home. With no phone or computer access, Damien could not reach out for help or learn what resources were available to him.
Recognizing the moment's urgency, the Mat-Su Job Center quickly contacted Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) Case Coordinator Tiana Freeman. The staff knew contacting Damien again might prove difficult once he left the office. Tiana acted swiftly, connecting with a Catholic Social Services (CSS) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) representative. Tiana merged the call so Damien could speak with CSS directly after making them aware of the urgent matter. The CSS rep coordinated with Damien, guiding him to their office just a short drive away.
Upon his arrival, the CSS team quickly assessed Damien's eligibility for their program. Thankfully, Damien qualified and was placed into a short-term housing solution, offering him much-needed relief from the uncertainty of living in his truck. As they worked toward securing a long-term unit, Damien expressed deep gratitude, wishing he had known about these services sooner. AKWP will continue to maintain contact with Damien to ensure that he receives stable housing and that any other needs he has are met. We cannot wait to see him thrive.
